Tension in village after woman's suicide

By Our Staff Reporter

NALGONDA, MAY 1. Tension prevailed in Juvvigudem village of Narketpally mandal on Saturday following the alleged suicide of a woman, who was reportedly charged with infidelity by another woman.

According to the Nakrekal Circle Inspector, Nizamuddin, Sunitha (20) consumed pesticide after being admonished by Kamalamma, her neighbour, last night. The latter charged the former with having an illicit relationship with her husband, K. Ramulu (55). Kamalamma reportedly threw a pesticide tin at Sunitha and asked her to consume it lest she should face dire consequences. She also allegedly roughed up a relative of Sunitha.

Hurt by the incident, Sunitha, who was married to an agricultural labourer two years ago, committed suicide by consuming the pesticide. She died while being shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Nalgonda. Enraged by the alleged highhandedness of Kamalamma, villagers led by the sarpanch, Kushal Reddy of the Telangana Rastra Samithi, staged a dharna in front of her house after keeping the body at the main gate. They raised slogans against the woman and her family and demanded compensation for the bereaved family. Irate villagers did not allow the police to shift the body for inquest. Then Mr. Nizamuddin rushed to the spot with additional force and spoke to villagers. He informed the villagers that Sunitha's family would get compensation under the Apatbandhu scheme. The protesters allowed the police to shift the body to Nalgonda hospital in the evening. A case was booked against Kamalamma.

However, the CI said the police also booked cases against the sarpanch and ten other on the charge of obstructing police officers on duty.
