Guidelines for mercury `lingam' puja

By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD, MAY 1. Keeping in view the safety of the devotees thronging the Sri Dattashram at Anksapur in Velpur mandal where a 411-kg mercury-based Sivalingam was consecrated earlier this week, the District Collector, D.V.Raidu, on Saturday issued guidelines and precautionary measures to be taken by the people.

The 411-kg Sivalingam, said to be one of the biggest of its kind in the country has been attracting a large number of devotees. The Federation of Atheist and Rationalist Association and the Jana Vignan Vedika had urged the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, to take action against the organisers of the ashram for installing mercury `lingam' allegedly without obtaining prior permission from the authorities. The two organisations had cautioned the people against environmental dangers from mercury vapours and water and soil contamination. The Collector, today issued a press statement asking the devotees to take certain preventive measures to avoid any incident. He said that the devotees should not touch the `lingam' nor conduct `abhishekam' pujas. Devotees were also asked not to drink the water poured on the `lingam.' He pointed out that in Haridwar, where a similar `lingam' has been installed there were some restrictions while performing pujas. He said the devotees were allowed to offer puja from a distance and the sanctum sanctorum was open only during day time.

He said the AP Pollution Control Board engineer, Hanmanth Reddy, has been asked to visit Anksapur to study any environmental impact due to the pujas.
