Spanish daily reports Beckham will stay at Madrid
MADRID,
MAY 1.
David Beckham won't be sold for at least another year, Spain's leading sports newspaper said on Saturday, as speculation continued in the British press that the star midfielder will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Beckham, who is under contract until 2007, decided with club president Florentino Perez at a meeting two weeks ago that he would remain with Madrid for a season and then ``they would see'' the daily Marca said.
Perez is said to have offered ``full support'' to Beckham after he acknowledged his first season with Madrid hadn't been the success he hoped for when he joined from Manchester United last June.
Madrid recently attempted to shield the player, who turns 29 on Sunday, from the glare of publicity by banning British newspaper journalists from press conferences.
Most have noted that millionaire Enrique Sobrino, who is expected to be a candidate in Real Madrid's presidential election in the summer, has said he would sell Beckham if elected.
Britain's press continued to insist on Saturday that Beckham will be traded to Chelsea at the end of the season, although one paper said English champion Arsenal could be a possible destination. AP
