Seeds have it easy

KOCHI, MAY 1. Haryana's Himanshu Sharma, the top seed, and the next four seeds - International Masters IOC's D.V. Prasad, Tamil Nadu's Varghese Koshy, V. Saravanan and Poobesh Anand - all posted comfortable first round wins in the second B.C. Cochin all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament which began at the Kadavanthra YMCA here on Saturday evening.

Among the opening day's other prominent winners were the talented G.N. Gopal of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh's young Nikhilesh Kumar.

L. Kuriakose, Chief Income Tax Commissioner (Thiruvananthapuram) inaugurated the nine-round event this morning at the Ernakulam YMCA. The tournament concludes on May 6.

Diwaker (Kar), R.B. Dusana (Mah) lost to S. Amitpal Singh (AP), Dusthageer Ibrahi (TN) lost to G.N. Gopal (Ker), Gunasekhar (ICF) bt Ilancherian (TN), Y. Syed Anwar (ICF) bt Ishandev Kumar (TN), S.
