Aparna qualifies for Olympics
NEW DELHI,
MAY 1.
Aparna Popat is the lone Indian shuttler who will be representing the country in the badminton event of the Athens Olympic games.
For Aparna, who at present is the National women's champion, this will be her second appearance in the Olympics having taken part in the 2000 Games at Sydney.
As per the qualifying list for the Olympics announced by the International Badminton Federation, Aparna is ranked 23rd in the world and is the only Indian there.
In the men's section, former National champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Nikhil Kanetkar failed to qualify for the Games.
For the two Indians, ranked 44th and 48th respectively, the only hope to participate in the Olympics depends if some players, who have already qualified, withdraw.
Gupta and Kanetkar are placed 2nd and 5th in the standby list of the IBF. UNI
