CHENNAI, MAY 1. The all-India secretary of the Congress, Sudarsana Natchiappan, today denied that there was any groupism in the State unit. The cadres were working unitedly to defeat the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Bharatiya Janata Party (AIADMK-BJP) front in the Lok Sabha election, he said. Talking to newsmen here, he said the workers were firm on winning the maximum number of seats in Tamil Nadu to enable the party president, Sonia Gandhi, to become Prime Minister. The voters were fed up with the National Democratic Alliance rule and were anxious to change the government. Mr.Natchiappan, who won from Sivaganga in 1999, said he had no problem with the high command giving the ticket to the former Union Minister, P.Chidambaram. He would campaign in the constituency on May 4 and 5. Mr.Natchiappan, who would coordinate election work with alliance parties in southern States, said the high command and the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee would decide Ms. Gandhi's tour programme. Referring to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's attack on Ms. Gandhi's foreign origin, he said she was raising the issue as her party was facing defeat. Ms. Gandhi had no ambition to become Prime Minister and she only wanted to serve the country and implement welfare programmes for the poor, he said.
