Udupi
By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, MAY 1 . The President of the Udupi City Municipal Council, Chittaranjandas Hegde, said here on Saturday that active cooperation of the people was essential to keep the city clean and green. He was speaking after participating in the "Clean and Green Udupi" campaign launched by the council in association with the Udupi chapter of Help Desk. Mr. Hegde said keeping the city clean was not just the responsibility of the council but also that of the people. The campaign would succeed if voluntary organisations lent a helping hand. It was necessary to extend the green cover in the city, Mr. Hegde said. The Leader of the Opposition in the council, S. Ramananda Bhat, said efforts should be made to dispose off solid waste at its places of origin. The waste generated in houses could be converted into fertilizers and used in kitchen gardens, he added. Gujjady Prabhakar Nayak and Renold Praveen Kumar, municipal councillors, Shantharaj Aithal of Consumer's Forum, Murari Ballal, environmentalist, Gangadhar Hegde of Help Desk, and heads of various voluntary organisations were present. Earlier, the municipal councillors and students of Upendra Pai Memorial College, Government Women's College, and SDM College of Ayurveda took part in a procession from the taluk office to the city bus stand.
