HYDERABAD, MAY 1. Eminent cardiologist and Chairman, Care Hospitals, B. Soma Raju, on Saturday underscored the need for a concerted movement to prevent heart diseases with the use of technology in future. He was participating in a symbolic foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Catheter manufacturing facility being developed by Relisys Medical Devices Limited, in the presence of the Director, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Kakarla Subba Rao, the Vice-Chancellors -- Kota Hari Narayana (University of Hyderabad) and Chandrakanth Kokate (Kakatiya University) and the Director, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), J. S. Yadav. Dr. Somaraju said, "What we have by way of technology is not enough for the common man. The future lies in preventing heart diseases with the use of technology. Twenty years from now heart operations will probably be automatic with minimal incision." He said that before 1993, since the advent of the stent, at least seven to 12 people out of every 100 were going for emergency heart surgery. After 1993 however, angioplasty had become increasingly popular, he said. "What we need now is to develop technology related to the stent itself," he stated. Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao said that it was now the time of a medical and bio-technological revolution after the industrial, the green and the blue revolutions, over the years. However, he said that the technological advancements apart, human resources still needed improvement. "We need a heart, an attitude," he said. Others who addressed the gathering were Prof. Kota Hari Narayana, Prof. Chandrakanth Kokate, Prof. J.S. Yadav and the company's Managing Director, N.G. Badrinarayana. While the Chairman, Relisys Medical Devices Limited, N. Krishna Reddy, welcomed the gathering, one of the company Directors, N. Ramakrishna Rao, proposed a vote of thanks.
