THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 1 . Marches, meetings and pledge-taking marked the observance of the World Labour Day in the State capital today. A May Day meeting was held under the auspices of the INTUC in the DCC auditorium. The assembled workers took a pledge to protect the unity of the country and to resist communalism at all costs. The former MP, A. Charles, delivered the pledge. The DCC president, Peethambara Kurup, inaugurated the meeting, which was chaired by the State secretary, Chala Sudhakaran. Transport workers owing allegiance to the INTUC took out a vehicle procession from the Martyrs' Column at Palayam to Thampanoor today morning. A large number of taxies, tempo vans and autorickshaws took part in the procession. The CITU also organised a vehicle rally in the city in connection with Labour Day. A public meeting was also organised by the left trade unions at the Putharikkandam maidan in the evening.
