KOCHI, MAY 1. A boy drowned after he fell from a tourist boat in the backwaters off Kochi this evening. The police said that the incident took place at 7-30 p.m. near the Bolghatty Palace. Edwin (4), son of Giby Simon and Minu of Palakkadan House, Kothamangalam, fell off the boat that the family had boarded to take a cruise in the backwaters. Mr. Giby too jumped into the water to save his son, but in vain. Edwin was rushed to the Medical Trust Hospital but could not be saved. Mr. Giby is missing. The couple have a daughter, Megha (9). Naval divers were called in for the search of Mr. Giby, who was presumed drowned. They searched under water till 11 p.m. Even after the Naval men returned, the police continued their search in boats. The body was not found till 12 midnight. The search will continue tomorrow.
