Pondicherry
By Deepa H Ramakrishnan
PONDICHERRY, MAY 2. Artists always complain of `commercialisation of art.' But for these students of visual communication and designing (VCD) creating advertisements is their main stay. "Right from the formation of company to marketing the product, artists like us have work to do. We do everything from creating and designing new logos and names for companies and products and develop advertisements for every kind of media, including television, newspapers, hoardings and even the Internet" say the 6 final year students of Bachelor of Fine Arts of the Bharathiyar Palkalai Koodam, whose collection of advertisements were exhibited for two days on the college campus at Ariyankuppam here. Using catchy one-lines they make advertisements with beautiful colours conveying the message across to viewers. "Even if a company makes the most perfect and best product, it requires proper advertising and strategy to sell the product. Through our advertisements that are art forms in their own right, we catch the attention of consumers and then place the product in their mind," says K. Thuyavarman, a student. The students had put up selected advertisements, calendar sheets and book wrappers they have designed over the past three years. Most of the advertisements for jewels, slippers, cars, cellular phones, food festivals, baby foods and bath soaps were hand drawn. "Each one took us around 10 days of work right from the conception stage to the end product. But by using Photoshop and Corel Draw, we take just two hours to finish the advertisement on the computer", says Premila, another student. An advertisement for a car goes like this: "It took 5 million years before you learnt to walk. In 5 seconds we will teach you to fly!"
