Ph.D awarded

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University has awarded a Ph.D in Economics to V. Seshadri, joint secretary of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, New Delhi, for his thesis on "Consumerism with reference to select Home Appliances in Chennai'' under the supervision of A. Ranga Reddy.

Scholarship for NCC cadets

TIRUPATI: The Director General of NCC National Cadet Core, New Delhi, has announced the Cadet Welfare Society merit scholarship award to three cadets in the district.

The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each, would be presented to L. Suresh and P. Venkataramana Reddy of 513 JD troupe, based at ZP high school, Tiruchanur and B. Srikanth, based at ZP high school, Damalcheruvu, by A.K. Yadav, Commanding Officer of 29 Andhra battalion at a function to be held at the battalion office on Chandragiri road (Opp ANGRAU staff quarters) on May 4.

JVV calls bandh

NELLORE: The district units of Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) and Environment Protection Committee (EPC), have jointly gave a call for a bandh in Muttukur of Nellore district on May 4, against the alleged attempts to ensure permission for the Chennai-based company to establish a PVC pipe manufacturing plant at Muttukur.

Boy succumbs to injuries

CUDDAPAH: A nine-year-old boy, Manohar Reddy, who sustained injuries in a road mishap while crossing the road near Kothapet in Khajipet mandal three days ago, succumbed to injuries in a hospital at Tirupati on Sunday, according to the police. He was hit by a beedi-laden van while crossing the road.

SFI demand

CUDDAPAH: The Students Federation of India district secretary, T. Sunil, and joint secretary, S. Prakash, on Sunday demanded that officials concerned initiate stern action against the private junior colleges and schools which were functioning during summer vacation.

Governor greets Muslims

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, has greeted Muslims on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Mohammad.

In a message on Sunday, he described the Prophet as an inspirational beacon showing the light of love, brotherhood and virtue to mankind. "His mission is fulfilled by each one of us, when we serve our fellowmen with faith, trust, caring and compassion."

Mr. Barnala wished that the day would usher in peace and goodwill amongst all.

CM's greetings

The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has also greeted the Muslim brethren in the State on the occasion.

In a message here on Sunday, Mr. Naidu said Prophet Mohammed symbolised the qualities of patience, perseverance, love and universal brotherhood. Pointing out that the Prophet's teachings were more relevant today, the Chief Minister hoped that the Prophet's life and message would inspire people and the generations to come.

Appeal to Kanda on viral fever

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham, while drawing the attention of the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, to the spread of viral fever in different parts of the State, has demanded immediate supply of safe drinking water to people.

In a memorandum, P. Ramaiah, president, and B. Venkat, general secretary of the sangham, stated that viral fever had already claimed a boy's life in Khammam district, even as many affected persons had been hospitalised in Kurnool district.

The memorandum sought supply of foodstuff through anganwadi centres to children, elderly persons and pregnant women and deployment of mobile medical teams in villages.

It said free medicines should be provided to the affected people at Government hospitals.

RTC union deplores court order

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Transport Mazdoor Sangh has urged the Government to take swift action to challenge the High Court order, which it claimed, diluted the force of GO 77 applicable to contract carriages operated as State carriages.

M. Nageswara Rao, its general secretary, in a statement issued here on Sunday said while the GO provides for penalty of Rs. 2,500 per seat and per quarter, the order alters it to a mere penalty of Rs. 2,000 totally for a bus.

He pointed out that `illegal' operation of private buses/vehicles was on the increase all over the State resulting in a financial loss of Rs. 500 crores to the RTC.

Mr. Rao said the Government should act diligently and pursue the case in the Supreme Court.

Farmer ends life

CUDDAPAH: A farmer of Prakasam district, S. Obulesu (32), committed suicide by consuming pesticide near the BVR degree college in Badvel town on Sunday.

Obulesu, belonging to Gadikota village in Giddalur mandal, owed debts to the tune of Rs. 40,000 and was anguished at the damage of sunflower seed. He came to his in-laws' house at Ramanjaneyanagar in Badvel two weeks ago, according to the Badvel Urban sub-inspector, Ravindranath Reddy.

Obulesu died while his relatives were taking him to hospital.

Ex-naxal shot dead

CUDDAPAH: Naxalites of People's War shot dead a former Papaghni Dalam member, Manchinti Venkatadri alias Murali (25), who turned into a `fake' naxalite and resorted to extortions, between Epilavankapalle, a hamlet of Madhavaram village in Rayachoti mandal and Sakibanda in Chinnamandem mandal in Rayachoti constituency, in the wee hours of Sunday.

Venkatadri, belonging to Chinnabidiki Harijanawada in Chinnamandem mandal, left the Papaghni dalam two years ago, according to the police. The pseudo-naxalite was released from jail in February this year and resumed his extortion bid.

Naxalites were said to have left a letter at the scene of killing stating that they killed him for extorting money by impersonating as a naxalite and also passing on information on naxal movements to the police.

Girl commits suicide

CUDDAPAH: Dasari Venkata Prasanna, who failed in the SSC examination, committed suicide by setting herself afire and in the process the house was gutted at Nandimandalam in Pendlimarry mandal on Saturday.

The girl, who failed SSC last year, failed to get through some subjects this year also, and doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze when her parents were away, according to the police.

Cop dies in freak mishap

HYDERABAD: A head constable of the Toopran police station, Bhoomya Nayak (53), died on Sunday after a 9 mm pistol went off accidentally while a constable, Baira Reddy, was cleaning it on the station premises.

The bullet pierced through Nayak's chest. Nayak died on way to Gandhi hospital in Secunderabad.

Two kids die in wall collapse

VISAKHAPATNAM: Two children -- M. Hema (5) and K. Prasad (9) -- died in a wall collapse near the Nookambika temple at Anakapalle on Sunday.

The Anakapalle police said the incident occurred when Prasad was returning home after giving tea to his mother, a tender coconut vendor, and Hema was playing near the wall.
