TVS Motor unveils new bike

By K. T. Jagannathan

CHENNAI, MAY 2. Two-wheeler maker TVS Motor Company today unveiled a new four-stroke 125cc motorcycle with a variable timing intelligent engine (VT-i). Called TVS Victor GLX 125, the new vehicle, it is claimed, is designed with an eye on urban two-wheeler riders who look not only for a peppy bike but also for economy and performance. The drum brake version of TVS Victor GLX 125 is priced at Rs. 44,990 ex-Chennai showroom. The disc brake version is priced at Rs. 47,990 ex-Chennai showroom. Victor GLX 125 will be available in dual colours of black-silver, green-silver and blue-silver. Venu Srinivasan, chairman of the company, said the VT-i engines were first used in TVS Centra, launched sometime ago. The engine is developed in-house at TVS Motor.

The new vehicle will have bigger clear lens speedometer, aircraft style petrol tank lid, stylish die cast pillion footrest, a sporty silencer in chrome with heat shielder, among other things. The vehicle is supported by digitally-designed seating posture with wider handle bar and easy gearshifts. The front dial comes with an econometer and green light indicator when the VT-i engine is saving fuel under closed throttle condition.

The new bike, it is claimed, is in tune with the market, which has become power and style-driven. Further, most first-time buyers opt for high-power vehicles, it is pointed out.

Fielding a range of questions, Mr. Srinivasan said TVS Motor, which has a market share of 16 per cent in two-wheelers, was aiming to sell one million vehicles this financial year. He expected the Victor to lead the pack with sales of over four lakhs, followed by Centra and Max with about 2.5 lakhs each. He indicated that the company would come out with a four-stroke Max by August this year. While admitting that the company had dropped its market share even as it grew in stature, he said TVS Motor would step up communication and ground level activities to gain market share.
