CHANDIGARH, MAY 2. In Haryana, the number of women electors has increased by 6,28,694 as compared to the last general elections in 1999. There were a total of 1,10,38,955 electors in 1999 as compared to 1,23,06,201 in 2004. The number of women voters has remained low as compared to men since 1967. There were 14,28,538 women voters as compared to 17,56,757 men voters in 1967 and the total poll percentage was 72.61. The percentage of women voters was 69.44 as compared to 75.41 per cent men voters in 1967. In 1971, the percentage of women voters was 60.47 as compared to 67.77 per cent men voters followed by 70.39 per cent women voters in 1977 whereas the percentage of men voters was 75.81. Similarly, in 1980 as compared to the 59.61 per cent women voters there were 69.44 per cent men voters. In 1984, there were 62.66 per cent women voters as compared to 70.44 per cent men voters followed by 59.22 per cent women voters and 68.83 per cent men voters in 1989. In 1991 there were 62.33 per cent women voters and 68.84 per cent men voters followed by 68.76 women voters and 71.95 per cent men voters in 1996. The percentage of women voters was 64.97 in 1998 as compared to 72.42 per cent men voters. Similarly, there were 58.26 per cent women voters and 72.42 per cent men voters in 1999. As many as eight women candidates are in the poll fray for the Lok Sabha elections this year as compared to three in 1999 and six in 1998. Nine women candidates had contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1996, six in 1991, three in 1989 and a maximum of 10 in 1984. There were five women candidates in the poll fray in 1980 and only two in 1977. There was only one women candidate from Ambala in 1967 when the State first went to the polls. While none of the women candidates contested Lok Sabha elections in Haryana in 1971, only five had won the elections in 1977, 1996, 1998 and 1999. It was in 1999 that two women were elected in a single year from the constituencies of Kurukshetra and Mahendragarh. The women candidates have so far been elected to the Lok Sabha from the constituencies of Kurukshetra (twice), Bhiwani, Sirsa and Mahendragarh.
