By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, MAY 2. The Krishna District Congress Committee on Sunday demanded that the district administration take immediate steps to meet the drinking and irrigation water needs of the people in Gudivada, Kaikalur, Bandar, Malleswaram and other tail-end areas under the Krishna delta.

A delegation of senior district Congress leaders and the party's candidates in the recent elections led by the DCC president, Mandali Buddha Prasad, met the Krishna district Joint Collector, P. Sampath Kumar, and explained the problems faced by the people in the tail-end areas due to acute shortage of drinking and irrigation water. They also expressed concern over the extensive crop loss in Jaggayyapet, Vatsavai and other mandals of the district due to the recent hailstorm and demanded that the farmers be paid suitable compensation.

The Joint Collector assured the Congress delegation that more than 2 tmc feet of water that was being pumped out of the storage in the upper reaches of Krishna for taking up repairs to Praksam barrage would be diverted to cater to the needs of the people in the tail-end areas.

'On the crop losses incurred by farmers, he said that the administration has already embarked upon the preparation of estimates and the farmers would be suitably compensated once the process was completed.
