Pathanamthitta
By Radhakrishnan Kuttoor
PATHANAMTHITTA, MAY 2. The roar of loudspeakers, fitted on a jeep flying the red flag, disturbed the otherwise calm interior areas of Kayamkulam. "Here comes comrade C.S. Sujatha, our leader, the Ruby of Mavelikara, seeking your blessings..." Curious women rushed out of their houses to have a glimpse of their political favourite, when the jeep carrying Ms. Sujatha, the Left Democratic Front candidate for the Mavelikara Lok Sabha constituency, winded its way through the roads of Muthukulam in the Kayamkulam Assembly segment. A glow of satisfaction was seen on the faces of these women when the candidate waved at them from the open jeep. The motorcade of Ms. Sujatha moved along to reach Kaduvinkalchira near Kareelakulangara. An orchestra of the party workers was singing old revolutionary numbers at a street corner in Kaduvinkalchira, preparing the ground for the candidate's arrival. It moved to the next point, Ramapuram, and from there to Muthukulam, Kandalloor North and so on in a closed van when the pilot jeep of the candidate's motorcade reached there announcing her impending arrival. As soon as the motorcade arrived, the cheering crowd surrounded Ms. Sujatha. Clad in a red-bordered white sari, the LDF candidate stepped down, waving at the people who have been waiting on the wayside to hear her. The crowd greet her with hugs and embraces and soon Ms. Sujatha becomes one among them. The sun was too hot and the party men brought tender coconuts to their leader. Ms. Sujatha offered the first tender coconut given to her to a hunchback elderly woman who was standing beside her in admiration. She addressed the crowd after accepting garlands and shawls from party workers. "Bless me with your votes so as to raise your voice in the Indian Parliament and to strive for the over-all development of Mavelikara constituency," she appealed. The corner meeting was over in five minutes and the candidate's motorcade moved to the next point. "Here comes the humble Sujatha, the symbol of simplicity, goodness, integrity...," the announcement went on luring the village folk enroute. Ms. Sujatha's constituency tour begins at 9 a.m. and concludes by 10 p.m. The candidate should be ready by the scheduled time so that the well-oiled campaign machinery of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) takes her to various venues, where corner meetings have been arranged as part of the constituency tour. Ms. Sujatha, being the president of the Alappuzha District Panchayat for the past nine years, is a familiar face in the four Assembly segments of Kayamkulam, Mavelikara, Chengannur and Pandalam. The CPI(M) has taken special efforts for her campaign tour in the Assembly segments of Thiruvalla, Kallooppara and Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district.
