A puppet show being organised in Rangayana as part of Nada Siri Yojane.
MYSORE, MAY 2. With Nada Siri Yojane, implemented by the theatre repertory, Rangayana, gaining wide acceptance, efforts are now being made to stabilise the project. One of the issues being discussed is getting sponsorships for the project. The Yojane is a project funded by the Tourism Department. It envisages sustaining folk and traditional theatre for posterity. It also aims at providing a platform for popular theatre artistes to perform traditional art forms for the benefit of tourists visiting Mysore as well as the people here. Sources in Rangayana said the issue of seeking sponsorship for programmes that had gained acceptance came following shortage of funds. Stating that the Government was releasing funds for the project, the sources said that while the Government had fixed Rs. 5,000 for one performance, the rate for top theatre groups went up to Rs. 20,000 per performance. This, the sources said, had led to a resource crunch. It is learnt that the Tourism Department has earmarked Rs. 5 lakhs for the project. Programmes are being organised on weekends. They attract a large number of people. The sources said that a meeting had been convened in which officials from the district administration and the Tourism Department would participate. Discussions, the sources said, would be on how to sustain the popular programmes and also the ways and means to generate sponsorships for these programmes. The sources said sponsorship would be sought from hotels, travel agencies and tourism-related business activities. Publicity material would be handed over to these business houses to promote the activities of Rangayana among tourists. The idea was to promote Rangayana as a tourist destination. Besides inviting popular theatre groups in the State, theatre groups from elsewhere would be invited to perform at Rangayana, the sources added.
Drama festival
The Rangayana will organise Greeshma Natakotsava from May 13 in which leading theatre groups from the State and elsewhere will participate. The groups include the National School of Drama, Iti Ninna from Belgaum, the Bharatha Ranga Shikshana Kendra from Mysore, the Dalita Charitryodatta from Kerala and Huttu Patra from Chennai.
