Three killed in separate accidents

MANGALORE, MAY 2. Three persons died in separate accidents in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday and Sunday. A pedestrian was run over by an express bus, a man was struck by lightning and another person committed suicide.

Mohammed Monu (35) of Sagu in Haleangadi village died after being knocked down by a bus near Padapanambur on National Highway on Sunday. The police said the accident took place when the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle. Monu died on the way to the hospital. Mulky police have arrested Sheik Javed, driver of the bus.

Sanjeeva reportedly hanged himself from a tree using a nylon rope on Sunday afternoon. The police said the victim was dejected in life as he did not have money to get married. Vittla police are investigating based on a complaint from Nonnaiah M., the victim's brother.

Vasanth Hegde (40) of Manchina village in Belthangady taluk died on the spot after being struck by lightning on Saturday. Belthangady police have registered a case. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed various parts of the taluk.

Destroyed: Unidentified miscreants reportedly destroyed banners and lighting fixtures put up by Mohiuddin Juma Masjid, Kulur, in connection with Id Milad festivities at Guddeangadi near Panjimogaru in Kavoor Police Station limits late on Saturday. K. Sheik Abba, president of the masjid, has lodged a complaint in this regard.
