BANGALORE, MAY 2. In the past year, Bangalore has seen a spurt in centres that specialise in "mental arithmetic training" for children. The latest opened at Chamrajpet on Sunday. Called Aloha India, the name comes from "abacus learning of higher arithmetic" and as the title suggests, the company professes to provide "a brain development programme" based on abacus, an age-old computing aid. Aloha India, according to a company note, has 152 centres in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, and Chattisgarh. The Chamrajpet centre had been set up in collaboration with Shakuntala Devi, noted mathematician, and her Educational Foundation Trust. There are other institutes in the city that offer similar courses. UCMAS Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System headquartered in Malaysia has a branch in the city. This company uses the abacus to help children improve their scores in mathematics. Then there is Smart Brain Karnataka, which is part of the Chennai-based Smart Brain India. Those who want to know more about Aloha India can call 98450 42790. To contact UCMAS, call 98452 05347 and call 9845283564 to known more about Smart Brain Karnataka.
