New director of BARC

MUMBAI,
MAY 3.
S. Banerjee, metallurgist, has taken over as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) at Trombay here. He succeeds Mr. Bhattacharya.
Prior to his elevation to the top post of the BARC, Dr. Banerjee was the director of its Materials Group. He has contributed extensively to basic research on metallurgy of zirconium and titanium based alloys and their applications in the development of thermo-mechanical treatment for processing several nuclear reactor components.
His work provides a basis for analysing the radiation stability of structural materials in nuclear reactors. Dr. Banerjee and his team contributed a great deal to the development of shape memory alloys and their applications in heat shrinkable couplings, which are finding extensive applications in the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Tejas.
