V.P. Singh interview

Sir, — This refers to the interview with V.P. Singh (May 3). If India is not shining even after 57 years of Independence, it is because of the Congress' 45 years of misrule.

Were the riots in Gujarat the only human tragedy in free India? Mr. Singh forgets the noise made by the Congress when the Mandal Commission's recommendations were implemented. Mr. Singh is fully aware of the Bofors scandal.

Is Gujarat India? What about the cold-blooded genocide of the Sikhs in 1984? Does Mr. Singh want the nation to forget all this and `let bygones be bygones'? Then why not apply the same logic to the Gujarat riots?

Hilda Raja,
Chennai

Sir, — Mr. Singh's talk of secularism and democracy was inspiring. His views on the formation of a secular coalition are welcome. It is not on the basis of religion that a democracy should function but on the basis of equality and the interest of its people.

R. Akhil Ratheesh,
Thiruvananthapuram
