Letters to the Editor
Sir, The treatment meted out to Iraqi prisoners by Anglo-American troops in Abu Ghraib is a throwback to the dark days of savagery and sadism. It is about time the U.S. leaders, thinkers and academics stopped paying lip service to human rights, democracy, liberty etc. they will feel more at ease in the company of brute force and abject arrogance while dealing with others.
S.C. Kapoor,
* * * Sir, According to the news report, "Severe reprimand for seven soldiers" (May 4), six soldiers involved in the torture of Iraqi prisoners have been "severely reprimanded" and the seventh has been given a more "lenient admonishment." This must be the greatest of jokes. The soldiers just walk away with a slap on the wrist, and once back in the U.S. all they have to do is find another job. If the tortured had been American soldiers, would George Bush have been content with this punishment? Wonder why Saddam Hussein was overthrown at all!
