dated May 5, 1954: Fazlul Huq's hope

Mr. A. K. Fazlul Huq, Chief Minister of East Bengal, said in Calcutta on May 3 that he did not believe in the political division of a country and that India "exists as a whole".

Mr. Huq, who was replying to a reception accorded to him by the Sarat Bose Academy at Netaji Bhavan, recalled his association with "two of the greatest sons of India" — Sarat Chandra Bose and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose — from whom, he said, "I have imbibed inspiration for selfless work in the service of our common Motherland."

He said he considered those who had divided India to be the enemies of India.

"Pakistan really means nothing if its only meaning is to induce the Muslims of this country to think that they have been brought from the clouds, having nothing to do with the neighbour next-door. I do not believe in this philosophy, and I can assure you that I shall try not merely to rise above all these considerations, but will be able to show that earnest endeavour to serve the country can always enable you to rise above all communal considerations.

India exists as a whole and if only we know how much we owe it to ourselves to do our best for the improvement of affairs in our country, we will find that there is no power in this world which can really divide us."

He had, he said, imbibed one great truth from Sarat Chandra Bose and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, "that we, as Indians, are above party, communal and provincial considerations."
