dated May 5, 1954: Nasser attacks Naguib

Altogether 25 officers have been arrested following the discovery of a plot on April 28 last, the Egyptian Premier, Lt. Col. Gamal Abdel Nasser, told a press conference in Cairo on May 3. The plot was hatched by the officers for overthrowing the Council of the Revolution. Premier Nasser said, "The President of the Republic, General Mohammed Naguib was at the root of various seditious movements which have been operating against the Government. Gen. Naguib is no longer in a position to encourage such movements. He is now merely the symbolic head of the State."
