PONDICHERRY, MAY 4. The secretary of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), T. Murugan, has urged the Administration to rush relief to the rain-affected people. The government should not take defence under the model code of conduct to deny distribution of food packets, rice or other relief materials to the people, virtually rendered homeless by the torrential rains, he said in a release here today. Mr. Murugan said the official machinery had launched a drive to collect house and property taxes without ascertaining whether the taxes levied were reasonable. The Chief Minister promised in February last that only after ascertaining whether the taxes sought to be collected were levied properly would there be serving of demand notice and collection of taxes. But the officials were now on the collection spree.
