The sources said 90 per cent of the hired buses in the division were running under profit. The division had a fleet of 545 buses. Of them, 145 were hired. The target in 2003-04 was to cover 648.08 lakh km and the achievement was 635.7 lakh km (98 per cent). As against the average mileage of 5.6 km a litre by road transport corporation buses in the State, the average in the division was 5.44 km a litre. The cancellation of schedules was limited to four per cent. The revenue earned by the division during 2003-04 was Rs. 78.22 crore. Ticket sales brought in Rs. 74.74 crore. With a total workforce of 2,780, the monthly outgo in salaries was Rs. 2.5 crore. The division had to shoulder the burden of providing bus passes to students at a cost of Rs. 14 crore, of which only Rs 3.5 crore was given by the Government as subsidy. According to the sources, though there was no shortage of staff, absenteeism continued. Steps were being taken to reduce it. Penalties were levied from private bus drivers for absenteeism and Rs. 3 lakh had already been collected in this regard. All depots have been computerised, and at present, there are no plans to run separate buses for women. It has been proposed to have the bus stand and depot at a place in Sandur town. The work on the new bus stand in Bellary is under progress and it is likely to be ready by October this year.
