Madikeri
By Our Staff Correspondent
MADIKERI, MAY 4. The Codava National Council (CNC) on Tuesday welcomed an order of the State Government dated March 31, 2004, making the use of Kodava mandatory in day to day business and administration in two taluks of Kodagu. However, the move to limit the use of Kodava to just two taluks Madikeri and Virajpet was not proper. It should be extended to Somwarpet taluk as well, N.U. Nachappa, secretary general of the council, told presspersons here. Mr. Nachappa noted that Kodavas had been deprived of job opportunities in Kodagu as they did not enjoy the reservation facility. This could hamper the implementation of the order as officials who did not know Kodava were employed in various important departments, he said. In such cases, the administration should appoint interpreters. Otherwise, the purpose of the order would be defeated, Mr. Nachappa added.
Criticised
Mr. Nachappa lashed out at the pro-Kannada activist and writer, Chidananda Murthy, for having reportedly criticised the order of the State Government. It spoke of Dr. Murthy's disrespect towards Kodava language, he said and added that the former should stop treating Kodava as a language from outside the State. Tulu should also be encouraged, he said. Mr. Nachappa said Kodava and Tulu should get their due patronage from the Government. On the contrary, if oppressive methods were used against minor languages, they could boomerang and lead to serious consequences, he warned. The State Government should direct the district administration to implement the order in toto without succumbing to pressure from any individual or group, he said. Dinu, Manju, Kalappa, Thammaiah, and Raja, CNC activists, were present.
