`Backstabbing' echoes in TDP meetings

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MAY 4. The Assembly constituency-level extended committee meetings of the ruling Telugu Desam Party conducted in the district on Tuesday echoed with the allegations that some party leaders had backstabbed party nominees in all the constituencies, where the meetings were held.

The party meetings were not conducted in Kadiri and Penukonda for different reasons. The meeting was not held in Kadiri due to the reported fear that the party's tacit support to an independent candidate, who is considered a follower of the Penukonda strongman, Paritala Ravindra, in the recent election would be exposed.

The party incharge for the constituency and Zilla Parishad chairperson, J. Suryanarayana, kept himself aloof from campaigning both in support of the BJP candidate for Kadiri Assembly constituency and the TDP candidate for Hindupur Lok Sabha constituency.

In fact, there were allegations that he had worked for his brother, J. Ramaiah, who had contested as Congress candidate for the Kadiri seat, indirectly by talking to his followers, the constituency-level leaders, to support the Congress candidate.

The meeting for the Penukonda constituency was not held as a routine, as the party meetings of all sorts are seldom held there due to the one-man show of Mr. Ravindra.

At the meeting of the Anantapur Assembly constituency, the party candidate for the Anantapur Lok Sabha seat, K. Srinivasulu, stated that the party had already prepared the lists of the party workers and leaders who had worked for the party whole-heartedly and who had backstabbed the party in the elections. Those who backstabbed the party would face disciplinary action while hard workers would get rewards, Mr. Srinivasulu said.

The party leader from Rapthadu mandal, Jaganmohan Chowdary, alleged that those who were elected in the last elections had forgotten the hard workers and instead helped either their community or were completely selfish.

The party candidate for the Anantapur Assembly seat, K.M. Rahamatullah, alleged that there were several leaders who had moved along with him in the campaigning but had actually backstabbed the party in the elections.

At the meeting of the Singanamala constituency, several party workers demanded action against the former legislator, K. Jayaram, alleging that he had worked against the party nominee in the elections.
