Special buses for EAMCET

CUDDAPAH: The APSRTC is organising special buses from Apsara circle, RTC bus stand and old bus stand in Cuddapah town to the EAMCET centres at Madina Engineering College and KSRM College of Engineering at 8 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. on May 6, said the RTC Regional Manager, G. Venkatanarayana, on Tuesday. Specials buses will also ply from EAMCET centres back to Cuddapah town at 1 p.m. and 5.30 p.m., he said.

Chess academy formed

TIRUPATI: Tirumala Chess Academy was formed on Monday with Agarala Eswara Reddi, former speaker of the State Assembly, as president. The academy, affiliated to Andhra Pradesh Chess Association, will be inaugurated on May 6 by holding an Under -15 AP Sub-junior (boys) chess championship on the premises of the Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) in M.R. Palle here from May 7 to 9. Participants can enrol themselves on or before May 6. The secretary can be contacted at 98852 65920 for further details.

Bandh observed

NELLORE: A bandh was observed in Muttukur area of Nellore district, on Tuesday, under the auspices of the Committee for Protection of Environment, protesting against alleged attempt to grant permission for a Chennai based company to set up a PVC pipe factory. Several voluntary associations including the Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) and political parties had been opposing the setting up of the factory on the ground that it would severely affect environment, resulting in enormous pollution.

Hank yarn supply scheme

CUDDAPAH: The Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, N.R.K. Reddy, on Tuesday invited applications from handloom cooperative societies and SHG/NGO handloom organisations before May 15, to supply yarn to handloom weavers under the SENWAB hank yarn supply scheme.

Man electrocuted

KURNOOL: A sanitation worker, Laxmanna, 42, was electrocuted while clearing a garbage dump here on Tuesday. According to reports, the worker, along with others, was loading garbage into the tractor at Indiragandhi Nagar when Laxmanna, came in contact with live wires at a transformer.

BJP ridicules exit polls again

HYDERABAD: The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party continued ridiculing exit and opinion polls by different agencies and said that while the party would get over 200 seats, the NDA would end up with a final tally in excess of 300 seats in the Lok Sabha.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, reiterated that the reports they had received from their `sources' were genuine and categorically said `every one of the reports received on exit and opinion polls were not correct'. The Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, and party leaders, Baddam Bal Reddy (Karwan) and G. Kishan Reddy (Himayatnagar), were present.

Intermediate first year results today

HYDERABAD: The Intermediate first year results would be announced on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Secretary, Board of Intermediate Education, Shashank Goel. There was speculation that the results would be announced on Tuesday itself. In a statement here on Tuesday, he said the results could be accessed on the following websites examresults.aponline.gov.in; www.cgg.gov.in/inter1; http://203.199.181.53/inter1; http://203.199.178.17/inter1; http://202.65.158.39/inter1; http://202.63.107.66/inter1 and www.ap.bsnl.co.in.

The results would also be available on the Interactive Voice Response System of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited with the roll number as the key. The following are the telephone numbers: 040-22222244 or 9540 22222244; 040 1255225 or 9540 1255225. Cell One customers can dial 12506 for the results. The results could also be obtained by dialling 1100 from any BSNL landline in the State, he said.

150 sheep killed in mishap

CUDDAPAH: About 150 sheep perished and 50 more suffered injuries, when a lorry ploughed into a large herd of sheep being taken for grazing near Thondur in the Pulivendula constituency on Tuesday.

Sheep-rearers staged a rasta roko disrupting traffic for nearly two hours demanding payment of compensation. The Thondur police seized the lorry and arrested its driver. The Minister for Housing, P. Ramasubba Reddy, visited the place and assured the farmers that he would strive to ensure compensation.

Vacation judges named

HYDERABAD: In view of the summer vacation from May 4 to June 11, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has named judges for hearing urgent cases.

According to a notification issued by the Registrar-General, the judges are: T. Meena Kumari, K.C.Bhanu (from May 4 to 23), Meena Kumari, S. Ananda Reddy, Bhanu (May 5), C.Y.Somayajulu, C.V.Ramulu and B. Seshasayana Reddy (May 24 to June 11).

The following will act as vacation officers: D. Suryanarayana Murthy, deputy registrar, A. Suvarna, Shaik John Basha, assistant registrars (May 4 to 23), D. Lakshmi Narayana, deputy registrar, P. Krishna Murthy, M.F.Qureshi, assistant registrars.

Except appeals under Section 383 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, from the appellants who are in jail, no applications other than those of urgent nature will be received during the vacation. The court reopens on June 14.

Change in flight timings

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Alliance Air flight between Kolkota and Chennai will leave Kolkota at 12.15 p.m. instead of 9.35 a.m. with effect from Wednesday (May 5), according to a press release from the Area Marketing Manager of the Indian Airlines, Bharat Kashyap, here on Tuesday.

The flight (CD 7542) being operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays will leave Kolkota at 12.15 p.m., arrives at Bhubaneswar at 1.10 p.m., leaves there at 1.40 p.m. and arrives here at 2.35 p.m. It leaves here at 3 p.m. and reaches Chennai at 4.05 p.m.

There is no change in the timings of other flights from here.

Five naxals surrender

KHAMMAM: Five naxalites belonging to different groups surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, V. V. Srinivasa Rao, on Tuesday. The surrendered naxalites included Payam Rajita alias Navata, a woman activist of the People's War.

The SP said Rajita was a member of the special guerrilla squad in the district. Another woman naxalite, Esam Sammakka alias Maridakka, a member of Janashakti Rajanna faction also surrendered. Brahmam alias Potaraju Brahmarao, deputy commander of the Praja Pratighatana and Payam Bayakka of the same group were among the surrendered.

`PW dump' recovered

WARANGAL: A special police party on Tuesday recovered a dump reportedly belonging to the People's War at Inuparallagutta in Kothaguda mandal here.

According to a press release issued by the district police, the personnel recovered five 12 bore rifles, 32 ammunition, 50 detonators, two cellular phones, camera flash, one walkman, 16 audio cassettes and eatables.

The police said the PW which lost five commanders during the last 35 days suffered a severe setback and lost active cadre. It had failed to attract youth to work for it and hence was dumping its armoury.

Tirumala temple closed for lunar eclipse

Tirumala: The hill temple of Lord Venkateswara would remain closed form 7.30 pm on Tuesday till 4.15 am on Wednesday on account of lunar eclipse.

The temple authorities have either rescheduled or cancelled certain rituals both on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After the conclusion of the eclipse, special rituals like punyavachanam will be performed, followed by other daily rituals. The general public will be allowed darshan of the Lord only after 9 a.m, on Wednesday.

Rain likely at many places

VISAKHAPATNAM: Monday's well-marked low pressure area over south-west Bay of Bengal moved inland on Monday night near south Tamil Nadu's coast and it lies over Rayalaseema and adjoining areas, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Tuesday evening.

Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 36 hours.

Chief amounts of rainfall recorded in cms. during the last 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday: Chittoor and Palamaneer - 10 each; Tirupathi - 9; Sullurpet and Pakala (Chittoor district) - 8 each; Gudur - 7; Tada (Nellore district) - 6; and Nellore and Puttur (Chittoor district) - 5.

Hyderabad: Heavy rain lashed parts of Nellore, Cuddapah and Chittoor districts on Tuesday as the low-pressure area in the sea moved inland and became "well marked".

The State Met office director, C. V. V. Bhadram, said many places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema would get light to moderate rain on Wednesday.
