FIVB Technical seminar begins

CHENNAI, MAY 4 . Mr. K. Murugan, Secretary, Volleyball Federation of India, who welcomed the gathering for the `FIVB Technical seminar on blockers' at the FIVB Development Centre, Nehru stadium, here on Tuesday, said, "Normally there is a good response to referees courses. Even coaches' clinics are popular. But there is not much response to technical courses. But we want more technical classes because the VFI is keen on building strong national junior and senior teams for international competitions. We are lucky to get an expert like Appie Krijnsen."

He also pointed out that internationals like Subba Rao, G. Pradeep, Dinesh Kumar, Rathish, Sube Singh, Shelton Moses and Gurbinder Singh have been invited for the course.

Mr. B. Sivanthi Adityan, Executive Vice-President, FIVB, and President, VFI, said: "Blockers play a more crucial role in modern volleyball. Seminars like this must bring in more professional approach to the game and make it a good spectator sport."

The Course Director, Appie Krijnsen, of the Netherlands was happy to be in Chennai again. "I am not an expert, but whatever volleyball knowledge I have I share with you people. I am happy to be in Chennai again because everything is well organised here."

A. Ramana Rao, Director, FIVB Development Centre, said, "we the Asians are the weakest in block. It is unfortunate that out of 14 members in the South Asian zone only three nations, including India, have sent in their coaches and players. It is difficult to get people like Appie and this Centre is arranging for such an opportunity."

Krinjnsen is being assisted by Justin Sombroek of the Netherlands, a former international. There are five coaches and two players from Sri Lanka and two coaches from Maldives. Seven Indian trainers and seven players are also attending the course.
