VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 4. Efforts to promote Visakhapatnam as a tourist destination will gain momentum with the inauguration of ropeway to Kailasagiri on Tuesday. The journey by the ropeway car will enable people to enjoy the panoramic view of the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal and a bird's eye view of the City of Destiny. The ropeway was developed at a cost of Rs. 3 crores with an upper station of 705 sq. metres and lower station of 538 sq. meters as a joint venture by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA), AP Tourism, and Conveyor and Ropeway Services Limited (CRSL). An area of 210 sq. meters has been developed for an intermediate tower. The Commissioner of Police, B. Prasada Rao, the VUDA Chairman, S.A. Rehaman, and the Vice-Chairman, D. Sreenivasulu, were present at the launching function. After the inauguration, Mr. Sreenivasulu said that the commissioning of the ropeway and other tourism projects would bring more tourists to Visakhapatnam. The ropeway was thrown open to the public after the engineering department of Andhra University verified the analysis and design of components and issued an "inspection and verification'' certificate. A technical team has recommended the promoters for periodical inspection/calibration of safety aspects. The ropeway has a length of 375 metres and each car can accommodate six persons. An amount of Rs. 35 per adult for to and fro journey and Rs. 18 for one side trip is being collected. The car will go at a speed of three metres per second and can handle a maximum of 800 people per hour. In the event of an emergency like power failure either due to disruption in supply from AP Transco or a snag in the generator, the engine mounted on drive for cabin will be brought down to the nearest station. The promoters have also made a provision for insuring 48 unnamed persons and 15 crew members.
