Supplement Sir, Hearty congratulations for the supplement `On the Banks of the Cauvery,' brought out on the occasion of the launch of the Tiruchi city edition. Indeed, it is a collectors' item. G. Sriram, Tiruchi. II
Sir, The launching of Tiruchi city edition gives us immense pleasure. We hope there will be a wide coverage of news from Thanjavur district. I wish the Tiruchi edition a great success. S. Gowry, Thanjavur. III
Sir, I am glad to know that The Hindu has launched an edition from Tiruchi. It will be more useful for regular readers like me in the central districts of the State. A. Srinivasan, Mannargudi. IV
Sir, I convey my good wishes to The Hindu for launching an edition from Tiruchi. As an ardent reader of this newspaper for the past five decades, I am delighted to see the local edition. The supplement brought out on this occasion was fine and exhaustive. T. Ganesan, Woraiyur, V
Sir, By launching an edition in Tiruchi, The Hindu has fulfilled its readers' long-time desire. I congratulate it on this occasion. I hope we will get extensive coverage of local news and also news from neighbouring districts hereafter. M. Muthukumarasamy, Alivalam. VI
Sir, We are happy that The Hindu has launched an edition for Tiruchi. We wish the Tiruchi edition all success. E. Joseph Patrick, Tiruchi. VII
Sir, Hearty congratulations to The Hindu for the launch of Tiruchi edition. B. Hajee Basha, Tiruchi. Water scarcity Sir, With reference to the news item published in The Hindu regarding water scarcity in Tiruchi, I wish to point out that groundwater gets depleted not only due to lack of water in the Cauvery but also due to indiscriminate construction of flats particularly in Srirangam and Melur. If further depletion of groundwater has to be arrested, construction of flats in the corporation area should be banned. A. Sampath, Srirangam. Bus service Sir, Students and office-goers are affected immensely since only three government buses and one private bus ply between Tirukkattuppalli and Kallanai via Poondi Madakoil and Koviladi though the road has been re-laid. Buses are scarce at nights. Kallanai, Poondi Madakoil, Koviladi Perumal Temple, Anbil Mariamman Koil are important places on this route. So, the authorities should take steps for operating two or three more buses and altering the existing bus timings especially at night for the convenience of students and office-goers. J. Jayaraman, Thanjavur. II
Sir, In the city buses plying in the KK Nagar area, men occupy all seats including those meant for women. Even aged and pregnant women and schoolgirls are forced to travel by standing. Conductors do not come to the rescue of these hapless women. The former Collector had strictly ordered that men should not occupy seats meant for ladies. But now, the transport authorities do not strictly adhere to the rules. Mubin, Tiruchi. Train service Sir, There is no passenger train service between Karur and Thanjavur on the Broad Gauge. I request the railway authorities to introduce adequate passenger trains in this sector. They could extend the Karur-Tiruchi Passenger trains up to Kumbakonam and the Thanjavur-Tiruchi Passenger trains could be operated between Kumbakonam and Karur. I request them to introduce a couple of passenger trains between Karur and Madurai both in the morning and evening hours. R. Palanisamy, Karur. Woes of pedestrians Sir, Pedestrians from Srirangam to Tiruvanaikoil and vice versa find it very difficult to cross the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway because of continuous flow of traffic on both ways right from dawn to dusk. For, there is neither automatic signal nor proper regulation by traffic constables. Srirangam and Tiruvanaikoil cross roads are not straight. Pedestrians have to walk on the main road for about 60 to 70 feet to take a turn. So, they wait at places of their choice in small groups. It is necessary to provide a pedestrian crossing on this stretch so that they can assemble and cross the road safely. K. Srinivasan, Tiruchi.
