Tibetans in Mysore staging a dharna on Tuesday in support of three youths who began a hunger strike in New York.
MYSORE, MAY 4. The Tibetan community here heaved a sigh of relief following an assurance by the United Nations to the community members across the world that it would accord the "highest level of attention'' to their demands. As a result, the plan by members of the Regional Tibetan Women's Association of Bylakuppe and Hunsur to go on a 24-hour hunger strike today, in support of the indefinite hunger strike being staged by three Tibetan Youth Congress members in front of the U.N. Headquarters in New York, was withdrawn. A press release issued here today said that the Assistant Secretary General of the U.N., Carolyn Mc Askie, met the Tibetans staging the hunger strike and promised to look into their demands. Tibetans worldwide have appealed to China to repeal the death sentence imposed on a monk, Tulku Tenzin Delek, and sought a fair trial under the supervision of an international agency. They have urged China to disclose the details and whereabouts of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, and demanded that he be entitled to religious education at the Tashi Lhumpo Monastery. The Tibetan Youth Congress had also sought the unconditional release of all Tibetan political prisoners and urged China to resume its debate on the question of Tibet based on its resolutions in 1959, 1961, and 1965. The development in New York brought cheer among the Tibetans here, and the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress saluted the courage and endurance of the three youths who undertook an indefinite hunger strike in New York. "Their action will be looked upon as an inspiration for our continued struggle to regain the rights of the Tibetan people,'' the release said.
