Five killed in Sadar Bazar godown collapse

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 4. Five labourers, who were working in an under-construction godown, were killed when the entire structure collapsed at Sadar Bazar in North Delhi on Monday. The police said the structure was being illegally constructed.

According to the police, the structure -- property No. 5084 at Rui Mandi behind Westend Cinema in Sadar Bazar, collapsed around 3-15 p.m. At the time, at least seven persons were working in the building. However, area residents claimed that there were nine persons in the structure.

The police, however, said only seven persons were taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital of whom four were declared dead on arrival. One person succumbed to his injuries some time later. Another person also sustained injuries but his condition is reported to be stable. Those who died have been identified as Abdul Karim (32), Manoj (22), Anil (22), Rameshwar (22) and his brother, Murari. The injured has been identified as Surender (26).

Following the incident, the fire brigade pressed about half-a-dozen fire engines to rescue those trapped under the debris. The task of clearing the debris continued till late in the evening.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the structure belonged to Lacchhi Ram-Satya Prakash Co. They had given the contract to Umar and sons for constructing two floors above an old single-storey building on property No. 5084.

A police officer said it was the roof of the top floor which first collapsed and took down with it the other floors of the structure. "The entire building was razed to the ground," said the officer. The police also said the structure was being constructed for the past quite some time and the local police had also informed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on April 12 that illegal construction was going on. But, the civic body did not take any action, the police said.

Meanwhile, Sadar Bazar police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and are trying to trace the contractors and the owners of the property.
