CHENNAI, MAY 4. Two head constables sustained minor injuries when a part of the roof in the Madhavaram police station collapsed this morning. According to the police, the roof in the second room of the station on Grand National Trunk Road, caved in around 11.30 a.m., injuring Venkatesan (54) and Sampath (44). Both of them were taken to a nearby private hospital and given treatment for minor injuries. The station authorities said that the absence of a proper draining facility on the roof resulted in water stagnation. The sharp rain on the past two days forced the roof collapse, they said. Also, the stagnant water that seeped into the roof corroded the reinforcing rods. The Public Works department constructed the building in 1984. A few years ago the station authorities pointed out the problem. However, it fell on deaf ears, some of the personnel said. Two years ago, a report on the condition of the building was sent to the authorities. But, no action was taken, they added.
