Child dies of bullet injuries

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MAY 4. An eight-year-old girl died on Monday after having been hit by a stray bullet fired from a police range near Perumbakkam in the Pallikaranai police station limits. Only during post-mortem on Tuesday, did doctors in the Government General Hospital discover the bullet above her left ear.

B. Jhansi of Perumbakkam fell unconscious in her house on Saturday evening. Her father took her to the Royapettah Hospital. Doctors there referred her to the GH, where she died later, the police said.

The Pallikaranai police registered a case under Section 174 (death due to suspicious circumstances) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, Jhansi's father, Babu, said the child was playing on the veranda when she suddenly fell down. Initially he thought Jhansi had hit her head against a metal object. Though their house was situated within two km of the police firing range no one suspected that a bullet could have hit her. The police said they had received complaints of bullet injuries from those staying near the firing range. Three months ago, a woman suffered bullet injuries in the leg. Police sources said people had encroached on areas close to the firing range. Though efforts were on to clear the encroachments, there were some problems.
