11.2mm rainfall recorded

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Humidity which was 77 per cent in the morning increased to 93 in the evening. Rainfall of 11.2 mm was also recorded.

Commodity prices

The following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Tuesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - Rs. 53, palmolein oil - Rs. 46, sunflower oil - Rs. 52, tamarind (flower variety) - Rs. 26 to 33, tamarind (karipuli variety) - Rs. 33 to 42, chillies - Rs. 14 to 22, rice (2716) - Rs. 12, rice (superfine) - Rs. 13 to 14, rice (samba masoori) - Rs. 15, black gram - Rs. 17.50 to 21, red gram - Rs. 27 to 30.50.

Dutt's plea to VMC

The TDP candidate for the Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat, Chalasani Ashwani Dutt, has urged the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to rethink their reported moves to collect Rs. 100 per month towards water charges from individual flat-owners. The move would burden middle-class families which comprise the majority of flat-owners/residents. The corporation officials should, instead, hold discussions with all the sections concerned and evolve a scientific way for collection of water charges, he said.

Repairs to barrage apron

The Irrigation Department has accelerated the works pertaining to depletion of water level in the upper reaches of the Krishna river for facilitating repairs to the concrete apron of the Prakasam barrage. Accordingly, the Department is releasing 1,500 cusecs of water to Krishna western canal while 2,000 cusecs is being released to the eastern canal. The water, the officials said, would be utilised for filling the RWS tanks in Krishna and Guntur districts.
