GUNTUR, MAY 4. A meeting of the Tobacco Board Production Committee will be held on Wednesday to fix the crop size for the current year in Karnataka and farmers from the southern black soils (Prakasam district) in Andhra Pradesh propose to hold a dharna in front of the board office to exert pressure on the committee to peg the crop size as low as possible. The Indian Tobacco Association, according to the trade sources, has indicated 74 million kg crop size for Karnataka, which the State farmers fear would legalise about 20,000 unauthorised barns in Karnataka reducing the A.P. growers' share. Collapse of Russian market and excess crop had brought the price for the SBS tobacco below season's State average of Rs.41.61 per kg for 41.57 million kg auctioned.
