Narmada with her daughter, Deepika, in front of the Excise Commissioner's office at Nampally on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD, MAY 4. Three days after accusing the Deputy Commissioner of Excise, K. Narayana, IAS, of cheating, dowry harassment and criminal intimidation, a woman, K. Narmada, began a fast-unto-death in front of the Excise Commissioner's office here at Nampally on Tuesday urging the Government to speed up investigation. The case took a twist with both the complainant and the IAS officer expressing readiness to go for a DNA fingerprinting test to confirm the parenthood of two children -- a boy and a girl -- whom Ms. Narmada claims are Mr. Narayana's children. The Begumbazar police, who registered cases against Mr. Narayana under sections 420, 498-A and 506 following a complaint lodged by Ms. Narmada on May 1, transferred the case to the Banjara Hills police station on point of jurisdiction. However, the Banjara Hills ACP, P. Chandramouli, said the case file was yet to be received. Asked why she was staging a protest even though the police had taken up investigation, Ms. Narmada alleged that things had not moved a bit even three days after booking of criminal cases. "Why cannot the police speed up investigation and arrest Mr. Narayana?" she questioned and said that she was ready for a DNA test to prove the point. When contacted, Mr. Narayana said he too was prepared for the test. "I feel the DNA test will prove my innocence," he observed. However, he rubbished the allegations levelled by Ms. Narmada against him and accused her of resorting to blackmailing. Accepting that he knew Ms. Narmada as she lived near his house while he was working in Adilabad district, Mr. Narayana refuted allegations of marrying her. Referring to his photographs with Ms. Narmada, which was shown by the latter to the scribes, the IAS officer said that he used to meet several woman beneficiaries of various Government schemes. "Just because I am photographed with a woman, one cannot say I have a relation with her," he said.
