COIMBATORE, MAY 4. A residential school has been set up to bring children of the Kondi tribes into the mainstream, as part of the Sarva Siksha Abhyan (Education For All) scheme. The school aims at educating dropouts and those who are economically weak. Don Bosco Anbu Illam, a non-governmental organisation, will assist the school in the effort. Children aged between six and 14 will be taken in for a six-month training and based on their capabilities, they will be admitted in regular schools. The expenditure incurred per child is Rs. 500 a month, which includes accommodation, food and medical facilities. According to official sources, about 160 families of Madhya Pradesh had settled down at Sundarapuram, which comes under the Kurichi town panchayat. There are about 150 children in the entire hamlet and 100 would be benefited by the training that will conclude on May 15. At the end of the course, an examination would be conducted and based on their performance, they will be admitted in respective classes. In future, the children will undergo vocational training also.
