NEW DELHI, MAY 4. One person has been arrested by the North Delhi police and three Municipal Corporation of Delhi engineers have been suspended in connection with the godown collapse in which five labourers were killed on Monday. Meanwhile, clearing of the debris continued till late on Tuesday. According to the police, Sarfuddin, manager of Umar and Sons who were contractors for the under-construction godown, was arrested late last night. A hunt is now to trace Umar, the main contractor, and also the owners of the property, Lacchhi Ram-Satya Prakash and Co. Meanwhile, the MCD authorities today suspended Junior Engineer, K.K. Arora, Assistant Engineer, Jagdish, and Executive Engineer, Javed, and initiated a vigilance inquiry against them. The vigilance Department has been asked to submit its report within 15 days. On Monday, the police had said that they had informed the MCD about illegal construction being carried out on property No. 5084, Rui Mandi in Sadar Bazar, on April 12, but no action was taken. While there has been no rise in the yesterday's toll in the incident, there are fears that some more persons may be trapped under the debris. On Monday, the police had said seven persons were working in the building when the structure collapsed. While five of them died, two sustained injuries. However, the area residents had claimed that nine persons were working when the tragedy occurred. With the debris still being cleared by the fire brigade personnel, the possibility of two more persons trapped under the debris has not been ruled out. In wake of the incident, the BJP leader in MCD, Vijender Kumar Gupta, today demanded adequate compensation to the next of the kin of the five labourers who died yesterday and also to those who were injured. Sadar Bazar police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and are investigating further.
