Diarrhoea in Ramnad dt.

By C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM, MAY 5 . As the rain continued for the fourth consecutive day today, an outbreak of diarrhoea has been reported from at least two places in Ramanathapuram district, owing to water contamination.

Lakshmi (40) of Pampan and Maheswari (40) of Ramanathapuram have been admitted to the Government Hospital with complaints of diarrhoea and more 100 people, mostly from the Pampan area, had been given treatment for severe fever.

Health officials said consumption of contaminated water could be the reason behind the sudden spurt in the number of patients.

The Collector, S. Vijayakumar, directed the officials to take preventive measures in the affected areas. The officials, who were camping in the Rameswaram Island, have been sprinkling "scyfluthrin" medicine in all 14 villages coming under the Karaiyur and Natarajapuram primary health centre areas.
