Supreme Court rejects plea for ban on cow slaughter
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MAY 5.
The Supreme Court today dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition for a direction to the Union Government to bring a legislation banning cow slaughter across the country on the ground that it was hurting the religious sentiments of the majority community.
A three-judge Bench comprising the Chief Justice S. Rajendra Babu, Justice G.P. Mathur and Justice S.H. Kapadia dismissed the PIL filed by one Satya Prakash and another seeking enforcement of their fundamental right to religion.
Counsel for the petitioner, Rameshwar Prasad, said several States had already enacted laws banning cow slaughter since the majority community regarded cow as a symbol of the mother.
