By P. Subramanyam
LONDON,

. New Zealand's tour opener against the British Universities XI finally got underway on the third morning at Fenner's cricket ground in Cambridge and expectedly petered out to a draw on Wednesday. The first two days were a complete washout due to rain.
New Zealand was put in to bat by the Universities and by lunch the tourist coasted to 128 for two in 35 overs. David Wigley trapped opener Michael Papps leg before wicket for no score, then Mark Richardson (39) and Nathan Astle compiled a 90-run stand for the second wicket.
After lunch, Scott Styris was dismissed for 22 and then a heavy downpour followed. Astle, on resumption, made the best use of the conditions to remain undefeated on 64.
The scores: New Zealand 128 for three wkts. in 35.1 overs (N. Astle 64 not out) drew with British Universities XI.
