CHENNAI, MAY 5. Property worth several crores of rupees was damaged in a fire that broke out in a garment factory in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), Tambaram, late on Tuesday night. The Tambaram police, who are investigating the fire, said more than six fire tenders struggled for several hours and the flames were finally put out only by this afternoon. Even this evening, a few fire tenders sprayed water to cool the building. In the impact of the fire, the walls of the building were cracked. The police suspect an electrical short circuit to be the cause for the fire. More than 1,200 people were employed in the factory, but all of them had returned home after work. The property that was gutted, included garments and sewing machines.
