Air Marshal to visit Bidar

Bidar May 6. Air Marshal B.K. Pandey, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, Indian Air Force, will pay a farewell visit to the Air Force Station in Bidar. According to a press release, Air Marshal Pandey, who will retire on May 31, will inaugurate 20 quarters built for married officers of the Defence Security Corps besides a mess. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College of Wellington and the National Defence College in Delhi, he was commissioned in the IAF on December 25, 1964. A qualified flying instructor of considerable experience, he has served the Republic of Singapore Air Force. He was Air Attaché at the Indian Embassy in Kabul during the turbulent years of war-torn Afghanistan. He has held several other important positions during his long and illustrious career in the IAF.

Woman dies of burns

TUMKUR MAY 6. A woman, who was allegedly set on fire by her husband, died at Areyur, near here, on Thursday.

Police identified her as Choodaratna (27) of Areyur. They said she married Srinivasa (30) of Sirivara in Tumkur taluk recently. On Thursday, Srinivasa allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire because she had not washed his clothes properly. She died at her parent's house at Areyur after treatment at the General Hospital here. A case has been registered against Srinivas in the Hebbur Police Station.

Man, nephew kill each other

TUMKUR MAY 6. A man and his nephew stabbed each other to death at Sira in Tumkur District on Thursday. The Sira Town Police Inspector, C. Keertikumar, told The Hindu that Sikandar (49) and his sister's son, Rafiq (33), who were running a restaurant in the town, got into an argument over transactions and stabbed each other at Peshmam Mohalla. Rafiq died on the spot, and Sikandar died in hospital. Mr. Keertikumar said the bodies were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem.

Sentenced to jail for rape

Raichur May 6. Shankar Murgad, Judge of the First Fast-track Court here, has convicted Hussain in a rape case and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years. A fine of Rs. 20,000 has been imposed on Hussain. In a chargesheet filed by the Manvi police, it was said that Hussain had allegedly entered a house at Mustoor village of Manvi taluk on August 27, 2002, and raped the victim after gagging her when her parents were away.

Award for Kalburgi

Udupi May 6. M.M. Kalburgi, noted scholar, has been chosen for the Sediyapu Krishna Bhat Memorial Research Award, instituted by the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Centre, for 2004. In a press release issued here, the Director of the Centre, Heranje Krishna Bhat, has described Prof. Kalburgi as a scholar who has made invaluable contributions to literature, culture, history, grammar, and research. Prof. Kalburgi has served as the Vice-Chancellor of Hampi Kannada University and written more than 70 books including anthologies of poems, the release says.

`Kodava Desa' convention

MADIKERI May 6. The Akhila Kodava Samaja and the Kodava Samaja units under the Srimangala Nad in Kodagu will organise the second "Kodava Desa" convention at the Srimangala Junior College premises in Virajpet taluk on May 17.

The president of the Akhila Kodava Samaja, Matanda C. Monnappa, said in a statement here on Thursday that the takkamukhyastas (headmen) of the 35 nads in Kodagu and Kodavas from all over the district would gather at the convention which was aimed at fostering the Kodava culture and tradition. The convention would provide information on the feasts and festivals of the Kodavas, folklore, dress code, and other related issues. Kodavas who had made a name for themselves in the fields of culture, literature, and politics would attend the convention, Mr. Monnappa said.

Boverianda Nanjamma Chinnappa, who translated the Pattole Palame, an important book for the Kodavas, written by Nadikeriyanda Chinnappa, would speak on the topic, "Kodava culture then and now." Cultural shows would be organised as part of the convention.
