ISI agent arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 6. An alleged conduit of the Pakistani intelligence agencies, whose job was to create a network of agents for obtaining information on the movement of the Indian Army, has been arrested from Malviya Nagar by the Special Cell of the Delhi police at the instance of its West Bengal counterparts. Some incriminating documents have been recovered from his possession.

The West Bengal police busted the spy network after they arrested two persons - Mazharul Haque, a resident of Begusarai in Bihar, and his accomplice, Ali Mohammad Ratan, a Bangladeshi national, from Seerampore in West Bengal this Tuesday. They recovered secret documents on the Indian Defence agencies along with photographs of Barauni Oil Refinery and Danapur Cantonment.

Mazharul disclosed that one Mohammad Kamran of Begusarai in Bihar had recruited him to work for Pakistani intelligence agencies and that he was in the Capital. At his instance, the West Bengal police tipped off their Delhi counterpart about Kamran's whereabouts and subsequently, the Special Cell was asked to arrest him. On Wednesday, the police mounted a raid at the Malviya Nagar residence of Kamran's relatives and arrested him.

During interrogation, he disclosed that he was initially into smuggling of consumer goods from Nepal. In 1990, he went to Karachi to meet his relatives and stayed there for over five months after which he returned. Kamran disclosed that he again wanted to visit Pakistan but could not get a visa on his original passport. Hence in 1996, he obtained another passport from Patna under an assumed name, Kamran Alam, and went to Pakistan to get settled there.

Kamran managed to obtain a Pakistani passport issued in the name of Mohammad Imran and also got a job there. In April 2002, he came under the observation of Pakistani intelligence agencies and was coerced into working for them as an agent in India. He was imparted training in cultivating Army personnel and civilians for obtaining secret inputs on the Indian Army. He was taught to send coded messages and was familiarised with formation signs of different sections of the Indian Army.

In October 2002, Kamran entered India via Bangladesh with an intention to gather information on the Army exercises, details on Eastern Command and movement of the Indian Army across Northeastern zone. He further revealed that one Major Haider was his handler during initial days, after which Major Zeeshaan took over.

In September last year, Kamran recruited Mazharul and introduced him to Major Zeeshaan over the phone. Meanwhile, Kamran visited West Bengal and other North-eastern States and sent inputs, for which he received Rs. 70,000. The police have recovered from him a code-list and a diary containing incriminating information. Further investigations are on.
