Bilkis case: court rejects police officers' plea
By Our Special Correspondent
AHMEDABAD,
MAY 7.
The Gujarat High Court today rejected a petition of two senior police officers accused in the Bilkis Banoo gangrape and mass murder case, challenging the charges by the CBI against them of dereliction of duty.
Justice S. D. Dave, while upholding the CBI contention, however, allowed the petitioners to move the higher courts with the application if so desired. The two police officers, R. S. Bhagor and R. M. Bhamor, posted at the Limkheda police station at the time of the gangrape of Bilkis Banoo and other women and slaughtering of 14 members of her family in a field near Panivel village during the communal riots in March, 2002 were accused of dereliction of duty and helping the other accused in destroying documentary evidences of their alleged involvement in the crime.
The court disagreed with the petitioners' contention that any action against them should had been initiated within one year and that the prior permission of the State Government was not sought by the CBI before filing the chargesheets against them.
