The Supreme Court today took suo motu cognisance of media reports about the presence of Pappu Yadav alias Rajesh Ranjan, accused in a murder case and lodged in prison, in the Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency and sought an explanation from the Bihar Home Secretary and the Inspector-General of Prisons about the visit.
A Bench, comprising Justice N. Santosh N. Hedge and Justice B.P. Singh, issued notices to the two officials asking them to explain how Mr. Yadav was moving freely in the constituency.
The judges asked them to explain how many days the accused was kept in jail, the number of days he was in hospital and the number of days he was allowed to "roam around."
The same Bench, on a petition filed by the brother of the deceased Sarakar, had cancelled the bail granted to Mr. Yadav by the Patna High Court and had asked the CBI to take him into custody.
The accused was arrested by the CBI and lodged in jail in Patna.
