Consolation win for ASEB

By Our Sports Reporter

BANGALORE, MAY 7. Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) salvaged some pride with a 1-0 victory over Jammu & Kashmir Bank in the last match in Group A of the second division National Football Leaguehere on Friday.

HAL and FC Kochin had already qualified from this group for the final phase second stage league commencing here on May 11.

The match, however, lacked intensity and the lone spark was provided by ASEB's Nitu Narzary, who booted in a rebound in the 71st minute.

The lone goal was struck on the third attempt as the two previous strikes by Utpal Basumatary and K. Barma was blocked by J & K Bank goalkeeper Vikramjeet Singh. However Vikramjeet Singh had no answer as an unmarked Narzary swerved in and latched onto the second rebound to help ASEB finish with six points from four matches.

Meanwhile J & K Bank, having lost all its matches, drew a blank.

In the early minutes, Narzary's right-footer was blocked by Vikramjeet Singh and J & K Bank's riposte through Deepak Sangral was cleared by M. Swargiary. ASEB had another chance in the first half as Kamal Chetri scythed through the left flank.

However Chetri's attempt to curl in a right-footer failed. Utpal Basumatary had a couple of ineffectual runs and the teams trooped out with a blank scoreline at the break.

In the second half, J & K Bank's Gurmeet Singh's right-footer ricocheted off the right upright and soon ASEB settled into an aggressive mode though Shyambandhu Singh and Utpal messed up two headers. However amends were made by Narzary in the 71st minute and ASEB pocketed the match.

In the second stage final phase commencing here on May 11, six teams — HAL, FC Kochin, Eveready Kolkata, BSF, SBT and Fransa Goa — will compete for the top two spots. The top two teams will be promoted to the senior National Football League.
